WHAT IS ROLLER DERBY?
The game of Roller Derby itself is played out on an oval shape track. The game consists of two 30-minute halves; within each of these half is a series of 2-minute “jams”. There are two teams of 5 on the track for each jam, each team containing a jammer (the point scorer – has a star on their helmet), plus a pack containing a pivot (the one with the stripe on their head) and three further blockers. The overall aim of the game is for the jammer to lap the pack initially and then pass members of the opposing team, thus scoring points for each blocker passed. However blockers have the ability to try and stop the opposing team’s jammer from passing them using a series of manoeuvres whilst trying to get their own jammer through the pack. Overall there is lots of skill and tactics involved.
